Gene's Restaurant
Gene's Restaurant
A Family Tradition of Great Food and Community Since 1970
As we approach our 52nd anniversary this June, Gene’s Restaurant reflects on a rich history rooted in family, hard work, and community spirit. Founded in 1970, Gene’s Restaurant began as a small, 35-seat dining room with takeout service, located at 38 Erie Street. What started as a true "Mom and Pop" business has grown into a beloved local institution, known for its delicious food and warm, welcoming atmosphere.
The original location was surrounded by a bustling neighborhood, with landmarks like the Off Track Betting store next door and Canadian Tire across the street. From the very beginning, Gene’s Restaurant was a family affair, with the founders as the cooks, and their children helping out with tasks like washing dishes and preparing vegetables. A memorable opening weekend promotion saw takeout customers receiving a free case of Coke with their orders, a gesture that left a lasting impression on the community.
As the business grew, so did the restaurant. In its early years, Gene’s expanded into the neighboring building, adding space for a kitchen garden where fresh bean sprouts were grown. By 1975, Gene’s Restaurant made a significant move to its current location at 81 Ontario Street, marking the beginning of a new era.
Today, Gene’s Restaurant continues to serve up the same great food and community spirit that has made it a local favorite for over five decades. We look forward to welcoming you and your family to share in our tradition of good food and good times.
